Bug Description

Ubiquity have a different UI that lxkeymap. The keymaps are split into 2 parts : to the left the country, and to the right, available variants for this country. The section to test the keymap is above this 2 sections.

I think it's better to have 2 parts for the keymap. Usually, you search for your country, and after you choose the variant. For now, all the variant, for all countries, are in the same place.

The GUI can be found here : http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/natty/ubiquity/natty/annotate/head:/gui/gtk/stepKeyboardConf.ui
The code is in : http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/natty/ubiquity/natty/annotate/head:/ubiquity/plugins/ubi-console-setup.py

Confirmed. The expert gui has such a model.
I personally think that the ubiquity way is not the best one. But it should coherent between lxkeymap and the installer.
