The code checks for joysticks in /dev/input/jsX, can you check that this is the correct path on your setup ? It may be located in /dev/jsX which would be surprising because I haven't that in years.
Ah. Well I'm using the defaut Xfce theme, Greybird.
The icons used to be there. They may have been gone since I upgraded to 13.04... I know they've made changes to Greybird.

After investigation, I think we'll have to use our own icon.
I have 8 icon themes bundled with Xubuntu and only two of them have an icon for input-gaming...
