Bug Description
Going to the Help > Live chat (IRC) menu in Debian Stretch opens a browser in http://
Doing the same thing in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 does nothing at all.

The problem was that os.getlogin() showed "Inappropriate ioctl for device" in .xsession-errors in some cases, presumably due to how pkexec is configured in Ubuntu.
Used SUDO_USER as a workaround.
