Cannot login to Launchpad due to missing referer header

Whe I try to login with:

./lp-translations-tools-login -u myusername -s https://staging.launchpad.net/

I always get a "Login failed" result. Looking at the html page under output, this seems to be because:

"Launchpad requires a REFERER header to perform this action. There is no REFERER header present. This can be caused by configuring your browser to block REFERER headers."

I've tried setting the referer URL passing it as the --referer parameter directly from the script (setting the referer as https://launchpad.net), but then I get a "Launchpad doesn't understand the form data submitted in this request" in the html output.
