brightness keys don't actually work

Bug Description
Machine: DELL Inspiron 14z, intel Core i5 with inegrated graphic HD 3000
OS: Linux Mint LMDE 2012.04 64bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-2-amd64
It seems that the two multimedia keys [brightness up] and [brightness down] over F4 and F5 keys are irresponsive, hence they don't change the screen brightness.
Moreover the bar of "Brightness applet" works only with mouse scrolling and not by dragging it neither by clicking on '+' and '-'.
