Bug Description
The default video mode for grub causes issues with some LCD displays, giving a "video out of range" type error. It is far safer to use a text-only boot screen than a framebuffer boot selection screen, and only turn on framebuffer grub/consoles for users that explicitly request it-- it's pretty hard to recover a system when you can't see anything on your screen.
