Desktop icons and file manager appearance get corrupted at startup

Bug Description

I'm using Linux Mint 12 with the "Gnome Classic" Desktop. Sometimes the usual desktop icons and the file manager appearance change on startup (see attached screenshots). Although this can be fixed by rebooting it is still quite annoying and doesn't seem to be reproducible but random.
