This issue occurs to me since I upgraded from Lisa to Maya. While I read in a forum that the problem for others has been solved with Maya, for me it is the opposite. Computer: Dell Vostro 3750 i5-2430M

I solved the issue for me this way (Dell Vostro 3750, i5-2430M, Maya 64 bit, Cinnamon):
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones.conf
Replace the lines
[Element Speaker]
switch = off
volume = off

with

[Element Speaker]
switch = mute
volume = merge
