Hi

installing the 2 missing packages will allow this to work "unity-2d-panel" and "unity-2d-launcher"

however

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity2D

Unity 2D's goal is to provide the Unity desktop shell on hardware platforms that cannot currently support Unity's OpenGL requirements (see Hardware Requirements for Unity for more details).

Its architecture is very close to Unity's as it only replaces the user interface elements but still shares all the same backend components. Specifically, Unity 2D replaces the panel, launcher and places components as defined in Unity's architecture overview. Moreover it does not enforce the use of Compiz as a window manager but instead uses a slightly tweaked version of Metacity.

this implies there is a performance issue that needs the extra dependencies. this is likely related to the VM settings you are using

I had the same problem, moreover it is also persist if one want "stratx -- :1" from (local) console.
The solution is setting the .xsession file, e.g. "echo gnome-session --session=gnome > ~/.xsession"

This is rather old but the problem with xrdp still persists in Mint 17.
We can use RDP, with xrdp but only for default XFCE and LXDE and not for Mint Cinnamon and XFCE.
Workaroud suggested here doesn't work anymore.
Do we need to file a new bug?

Problem remains with the master git xrdp version 0.9.0, so it seems like a Mint issue.
