mdns does not resolve in 64-bit LMDE XFCE 201108 RC due to /etc/nsswitch.conf

Bug Description

In the default install of the 64 bit LMDE XFCE 201108 RC image, mdns lookups (e.g., ping mylocalserver.local) fail.

The problem seems to be due to the hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf in the 64 bit install. As shipped, the line is:
hosts: files dns

In the 32-bit install, where mdns lookups work fine, the line is:
hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4

When the hosts line is updated in the 64 bit image to match the 32 bit line, mdns lookups succeed. Can the 64 bit ISO be updated with this line for the final release?

This is still present in the 2012 64bit DVD.

What script changes the default debian file, and why?

Might be changed because of Bug #94940.
Yet, a better solution may be to add [NOTFOUND=return] to dns as well, instead of removing mdns, as suggested at:
