i am using crunchbang linux and installed firefox and thunderbird via the linux mint debian repositories. i experienced the same issue.

the repo i used was:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main import upstream

synaptic automatically installed afrikaans for firefox and arabic for thunderbird, the first packages along in alphabetical order.
