Fix:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/80mintupdate-debian
and put in there:

Acquire::Check-Valid-Until "false";

shorter (as root) run:
echo 'Acquire::Check-Valid-Until "false";' > /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/80mintupdate-debian

This setting (and that etc file) is provided by the mintupdate-debian package, which you should use in conjunction with the latest/incoming repository.

Changed in linuxmint:
status: New → Fix Released

I was just switching my Debian install to LMDE (as described here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=197&t=101438) and this concerns me. This bug is marked as "fix released" but this is definitely not a fix, just a workaround. Having to disable my package manager's security checks to use LMDE does not make me very confident. Why can't the release file be updated to have a valid timestamp?
