Bug Description

I am using the mint 11 RC1 booting from a usb key on a Samsung N130 netbook. When I boot to the desktop the brightness indicator stays on the screen and the screen brightness keeps going up & down. The only way to stop it is to tap the keyboard keys fn+cursor right/left to adjust brightness. then a few minutes later it can start flashing again.

I am having precisely this same issue on a Lenovo IdeaPad Y560. I have mint 11 dual booted on a separate partition with windows 7. I reinstalled every package having to do with power management and that seemed to fix the issue temporarily. However, the moment I try and change any of the default power management settings, it starts to happen again. The other part of this issue not mentioned in roadrash's report is that the brightness control indicator keeps popping up on the right-top part of the screen every time the system automagically changes the brightness.

Steve Cats's correct in saying the brightness control indicator is displayed on the screen. This is a random problem that usually happens after boot up. I also found that if the screen starts randomly changing brightness until I hold down the fn key down and tap one one of the keys for brightness adjust, in this case a cursor key. I then stops until the next reboot when it may happen at random again.

Hi Folks. I had the same problem. It was frustrating. The solution indicated on the website

by StormStrikes worked for me. I hope this helps others.

Never mind, the problem is back on my Lenovo ideapad. I remember I had this problem even when booting from the live dvd itself. I hope this gets resolved soon.

I am getting this problem too on a Lenova U460. Could this be related to the webcam (i.e. adjusting screen brightness based on light input from the cam)? Putting some tape over the camera certainly seems to alleviate the issue.
