A dialog pops up with a padlock "click to make changes", I click no "enter password" popup appears, nothing happens
This is a consistent fault, it always happens

If I execute gdmsetup in a shell I get the following error

Also affects me on LMDE

and when i sudo the error is this:

 sudo gdmsetup
[sudo] password for *****:
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: init delay=30
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: scheduling a passwd file update
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: reloading passwd file worker
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: include_all is FALSE
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: GdmUserManager: done reloading passwd file
** (gdmsetup:3825): DEBUG: Failed to identify the current session: Unable to lookup session information for process '3825'

The "login screen settings" windows comes up, the lock icon is unlocked, but the settings are still greyed out.
also when pressed to relock, the icon doesn't do anything

Same happens to me. The message displayed when clicking to unlock button is:

(gdmsetup:2945): polkitgtk-WARNING **: Error obtaining authorization for action id `org.gnome.displaymanager.settings.set': GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

Looking at dmes it seems that policykit has a segfault:

[ 127.170680] polkitd[2772]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f1c380e535a sp 00007fffbadaf4c0 error 4 in libpolkit-backend-1.so.0.0.0[7f1c380d9000+17000]

Meanwhile it is solved it seems that editing /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf and adding/changing:

AutomaticLoginEnable=true #if you want to start the session automatically
AutomaticLoginEnable=false #otherwise
