Hp all in one printer stopped scanning from sane/gimp

Mint 10 Julia, Hp Photosmart B110 stopped scanning in Gimp. Does not scan in sane/xsane but scans fine using simple scan. I had changed nothing except to update the system when the notifications came in. I have been unable to get sane to scan using the Gimp plugin or via xsane. The scanner fires up as norman and runs through the sequence but all that is reproduced is a white line some 2 pixels wide and just over 3000 long. I have uninstalled gimp and all associated parts and all Hp and cups packages and reinstalled them with no discernible effect. I then uninstalled all HP and cups packages and reinstalled using the latest drivers from sourceforge again this has made no difference.
