Bug Description

1)Version: Mint-10-KDE-64-RC
2) Situation: Simple logout of the current (the only existing one) user, to wait for the KDM login prompt to reappear
3) X finished (as usual, normally to reload and present KDM screen); instead the text-only messages showed
"checking battery status" forever, i.e. system got stuck. (My waiting time for this bug report: 15 minutes)
        Appearance SEE ATTACHMENT.

Shutting down of the virtualbox per virtual "ACPI-event" worked; i.e. the virtualmachine still responded and (supposedly orderly in runlevel "0") closed down - and no forced shutdown/close or killing was necessary.

NOTE This is NOT a laptop computer but a virtualbox-4.0.0 guest, running on a Desktop Computer host
(with no batteries ;- so checking battery status is "wrong action" anyway. => hardware recognition issue ??)
host System = Desktop system with AMD-Athlon Dual core, GeForce 8600, 10GB-RAM

4) normally of course a graphical login prompt should appear soon

5) Reproducibility: CAN BE REPRODUCED;
100% occurrence in this setup. I my case it happened in 4 out of 4 "logout-without-shutdown" attempts.

Same situation, logout from desktop to KDM and then relogin will hard crash system, only way to recover is pull the power.

OS: Linux Mint KDE / KMint Julia RC fully updated 32bit

Occurs on RC non updated, or fully updated

login update as provided on the mintUpdate does NOT RESOLVE.
Current: 1:4.1.4.2-1ubuntu3.2 updated Current: 1:4.1.4.2-1ubuntu3.3

System: Dell Optiplex 740
Dual Core AMD 64 X2 4800+
4GB RAM

Kernel: Linux rec9140-lara-kmint 2.6.35-25-generic-pae #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 19:01:46 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Graphics: ati X1300Pro Single Monitor Mode
driver: radeon, can only use this since ati removed support for X1300 and newer X versions

100% Reproducible, I reinstalled 3x to confirm this was a bug.

Got that screen with "checking battery state" once as well.

Only way to restore logout/login is to DISABLE KWin Desktop effects.

Only way to restore desktop effects after hard reboot is to
delete ~/.kde/share/config /kwinrc

then Alt-f2 and kwin --replace

If the system does not freeze at the "checking battery" text screen it will freeze after entering credentials for KDM. It starts to start up KDE, and normally as the hard disk icon is coming up it freezes you actually can see the faint shadows of the other icons on the KDM boot screen.

Using the XSWAT PPA for video drivers, doesn't seem to effect or correct, as this appears to be related to KWin effects and drivers. No resolution, same KDM takes credentials starts fade up of KDM icons, but crashes, hard lock up, with faint outline of icons.

Hi, thank you for reporting this issue!
Can you please confirm whether this issue
is still present in the final release?

Thanks!

I took the 32B-RC iso installed, same issue.

32B-RC fully updated from the updates available via mintUpdate, same issue.

Fully updated RC should be the same as the Final, sans Lancelot, correct ? ?

Yes this bug persists with Final Release, as tested with 32B-Julia KMint as of 1022EST 2/28/11.

Hard lockup at "Checking battery state ..."

Same system as above.

BUG NOT VISIBLE FOR FIRST TIME!
In order to help out and complete our "test series" here, I did a combination missing so far:
a brand new linuxmint-10-kde-dvd-amd64.iso install on a virtualbox (Version 4.0.4).
This was NO upgrade but a clean install.

While expecting the ever same "freezing" problem as above - it DID NOT OCCUR in this setup EVER today. Hell knows why not here and why on the other occasions (including a clean sheet 32b install, see rec9140's entry).

@Rec9140 - can you confirm: no upgrade but an clean sweep or virgin disk and direct install with final-release DVD?

My setup as in my initial bug file (Virtualbox) -- except here the final version was used (release from 19-FEB-11)
(whereas it was the RC in the initial bug file)
Tests I performed:
Install, first reboot, first login,
=> logout, login - no problems. It took some 30secs for KDM login screen to reappear. Then

define proper root password; Install packages dkms and build essential (preparation for virtualbox guest additions); then do all package upgrade as per Mint-Update.
=> logout, login - no problems. It took some 10secs for KDM login screen to reappear. Then

install the virtualbox guest additions: From the "virtual iso image" that can by mounted from the virtualbox menu. The Ubuntu virtualbox packages where not used. This procedure builds kernel modules and produces new drivers for the "virtual hardware". Reboot, and login to much better screen resolution and responsiveness (as usual after such procedure).
=> logout, login - no problems. It took some 10secs for KDM login screen to reappear.

WHAT CAN I SAY? IN THE KDE64-FINAL AS VIRTUALBOX CASE, new installed system, the BUG did NOT appear - ever!.
This may make it more complicated to locate th actual bug where it appears, but this is important as the one and only setup mentioned herein that works (unexpectedly) well.

Or maybe, a package or two can be located that is different here in this setup the in all other cases mentioned?

Yes, drive partitions removed, recreated, and reinstalled from a download of the 32B Final Release ISO.

Same problems, hard lock up to to "Checking Battery state..." only way to get the system back is to pull the plug, restart.

Only cure is to disable Desktop effects, then the problem goes away. Since that means no transparent kicker or konsole, thats not an effective solution for my needs.

No change with 4.6.1. Still locks up and the only way to remove the problem is to disable KWin desktop effects and thus no longer have a transparent kicker and konsole, which is an issue for me.

Installed to a different machine, KMint 64bit, fully updated, Kwin with desktop effects, OEM nVidia drivers from XSWAT 270.29, NO ISSUE, logout/login works correctly.

This appears to be KDM and radeon related.
