On LMDE 64-bit, "aptitude build-depends python2.6" encounters this:

  libfontconfig1-dev: Depends: libfontconfig1 (= 2.8.0-2.1) but 2.8.0-2ubuntu1 is installed.

It works for me now (almost certainly because of the fix for bug 695621).
