multi card reader sometimes stops working (SD SDHC compact, etc)

Mint x64, on a Toshiba with core2duo (intel t5200), centrino (intel graphics, wifi, lan):

the SD card reader is not always, but sometimes, detecting the insertion of SD cards.

ater a reboot, everything works again, but yesterday, it wasn't detecting them anymore, when inserted.

I hope this info will help someone help us. I am a noob but, not an uber-noob. I've been using Mint for about 9 months. My system will read the card after a great length of time (approx 3 min. for 8Gb). Not to mention, file operations are even longer.
