Bug Description

System running Mint 8 very well. Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L mobo, Intel 6750, 2x2GB, Leadtek 9600GT, Samsung R/W optical.

ISO d/l verified MD5, burned slow speed, verified write. Booted from CD, POST OK, goes into CD read, shows first line from CD then just hangs on black screen. Applied the "Eureka" workaround for UbuntuForum:
with the nomodeset added then CTL-X; see the b/w screen display as it loads then hangs after display of "sensor settings". That's it, hangs; no HD activity, no CD activity.

Please note this exact problem has affected many at UbuntuForum (9 pages). Seems related to graphical driver but affecting Nvidia, ATI and Intel graphics setups. As several wrote: "not ready for prime time"

PS: Did you try the compatibility mode of the liveCD? Does this boot successfully?

hello Clement:

I very much appreciate your tremendous work on making and maintaining Mint.
And so do at least five good friends, some total noobs but now Mint users.

Did not try compatability before but did so just a few minutes ago. Got
several pages of lines of the install then just black screen, nothing. But
CD light stayed on for a little while; did not notice HD light.

hello Clem:

I just now changed the DVI cable on the card, from the top connector to the
lower one (Leadtek 9600GT). Mint 9RC live CD booted with no problem, loaded,
looked around. All seems good to go, so just a hardware connection
peculiarity not letting some signal through (my guess). Know this has
affected ATI and Intel gear also; might make a warning on the final.

I have been unable to install Linux Mint 9 64-bit (final release) from either de LiveCD or the LiveDVD edition.

First, I had the problem with the monitor being put to sleep. Replacing the boot option "splash" with "nomodeset" prevents the monitor from sleeping and I can see several error messages. It complains about not being able to find certain Debian stuff and guesses it is the wrong architecture. Then, the installation hangs right after setting sensors [OK].

I have also tried the "nomce" option to no avail.

UPDATE:

After waiting for a very long while (maybe half an hour) just with the "nomodeset" option instead of "splash", the monitor started to display weird things. Then, after a few minutes of showing weird stuff, finally the desktop came up and installation was possible.

After installation, the monitor is put to sleep again. I guess I need to set the "nomodeset" option permanently as explained here:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=47558

However, I do not see the Grub menu anymore. Is there a way I can access to it?

OK, left shift works to access to the GRUB menu. I think everything is working now. Yet, this is not what I would call "user-friendly" installation.

UPDATE2: No, the system hangs again during booting. I will try Ubuntu.
