I had this error when trying to install Mint 8 in a small (~9.3GB) root partition with a large (~300GB) /home partition and the default 9.4GB swap partition, filling a 320GB disc. Half an hour later I re-installed in a 3 times bigger root partition (10% of the disc), the same swap and the rest as /home. No problems with the second install.
