Bug Description

I had this Linux Mint installed into my HP Dell Mini laptop and already loving it,

But I recently had set up the standby when laptop closes....and I had noticed something...every time I open the laptop to wake it up, the screen stays blank.

My guess is this is an issue from the brightness setting as the screen will stay blank, no matter if i press a random key or the mouse buttons. The only button that makes the screen "Wake up" is the brightness buttons which is (Fn F3 and Fn F4 which would be Brightness down and Brightness up setting) So I assume perhaps when waking the computer up...the "turn on backlight" command is missing or something?

Let me know what's up and if there will be a fix for that. Thanks....Loving this OS so far!!!

At first I did computer restart everytime this happened....One wouldn't be too happy if they had to save the a document but had thought to have to restart to restore the screen and lose it all unknowing that the brightness buttons on laptop is the solution.

Thank you for reporting a bug in Linux Mint. Unfortunately I do not have the necessary hardware to reproduce your problem. If anyone else can confirm this bug, please say so. Please check out the Linux Mint Forums, where there are many more people available to help out with diagnosing any problems you have. Please repost this in the forums, and put a link to it here, so I can track any further development. It is also exceptionally useful if you include the output of "inxi -F" when reporting hardware problems. You might also like to check out this article: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html This is a standard response, so it may not be entirely appropriate.

I have a similar though not quite identical issue.

On an Acer Aspire 3050, I did a fresh install of Mint 8 then updated all packages first with the graphical, then also updated the kernel and xorg with aptitude.

Telling the system to sleep seems to work until I wake it up. The screen remains blank and I can't interact with it at all. I've tried Jace's trick of adjusting the brightness with the Fn+[key] combo. I've also tried to blindly open a terminal, run 'sudo reboot' and enter my password. Pressing and holding the power button doesn't shutdown. The Caps/Num Lock keys don't turn on their respective LEDs. The only way I can get back is to disconnect the power and remove the battery.

I will add the output of 'inxi -F' shortly.

I've greped for suspend in /var/log. I get results from 6 suspends in pm-suspend.log which I've attached. Everything in it looks fine to me. The only other result is repeated in kern.log, messages and syslog.1. The text from kern.log is:

kern.log:Apr 27 14:10:30 berg-laptop kernel: [ 73.116885] Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug

Xorg.0.log.old contains matches for 'Suspend', so I'm attaching it as well.

Similar problem on both Ubuntu 10.04 and Mint 9 RC1 on a Dell Latitude with Nvidia card. Not sure if this helps but I have attached my pm-suspend.log

I just installed mint-9 and have experienced a regression in the wake from suspend functionality. In mint-8, wake was always successful, but in mint-9 the system appears to wake but the backlight does not come on and the screen is blank. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 video card.

That's the idea.

I'm not going to fix it, but someone else with the required knowledge might do it. But before that person can start working on a fix for your problem, we required the additional information requested.

I have recently bought an Asus K43U with AMD processor.

I found the same problem.

However while trying other distros (in a Unity avoidance strategy) I noticed the the version 3.x.x linux kernel that ships with Ubunto 11.10 does not have this problem but Mint 11 based on an earlier kernel does.

Tried with various other variants too. All the ones using < 3.x.x did not wake up properly, SO I am waiting for Mint11 to roll out the 3.x.x kernel in the hope that will fix it.

Same problem here on a Toshiba Satellite ProC850 1HD running Petra.

Left the laptop powered on overnight and this morning the desktop is blank with only the backdrop picture showing. This has now happened twice.

Tasks are runing still (Firefox and Thundrbird). Task bar present.
