Bug Description
Linux Mint version/edition:
Before the upgrade: Linux Mint 18.1 Serena
After the upgrade: Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya
What I did before the problem occurred:
I recently upgraded my local workstation from Linux Mint 18.1 to 18.2. Along with the upgrade came kernel version 4.4.0-83 generic. The latest kernel version I had right before the upgrade was 4.4.0-53. I triggered the upgrade procedure via the system's software update tools.
What happened and what is the problem?
After the upgrade had finished, the next reboot failed and returned to the GRUB menu after a few seconds of black screen. However, switching back to 4.4.0-53 worked without any problems.
The journalctrl doesn't give me any hints on what might be broken, since the failing starts don't appear in the boot logs. I previously configured journald to persist boot logs.
I'm running on the following CPU/Graphic card specs: AMD A4-4000 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics
What I expected to happen instead:
The system boots without any problems as right before the upgrade.
Frequency of problem occurrence:
The problem occurs everytime I try to boot the latest kernel via GRUB menu. I started with a fresh installation a few months ago (Mint Serena 18.1), so this was the first major upgrade I tried to apply. Kernel upgrades I received in the meantime didn't introduce breaking changes.
I experience the same issue, however, it's related to kernel 4.4.0.96.
