mintinstall crashes when nvidia-304 graphics driver is used

Bug Description

Mint Version: Linux Mint 18.1 MATE 64 bit

When NVIDIA driver version 304.135 is installed, mintinstall/Software Manager does not work. It will crash immediately upon attempting to open the GUI interface after the admin password has been entered. Switching back to the nouveau drivers fixes the issue, however is unsatisfactory as they do not work as well on my laptop as the nvidia 304.135 legacy drivers and the nvidia 340.102 driver causes system instability.
