Bug Description

Hello,

I have some issue with my dual display setting in Linux Mint 18 CE.

When i plug in second monitor (via VGA) nothing happens, only login screen is propperly mirrored. If i try to enable this monitor in Display settings (i can see it), then some rubish appear on the second screen and whole cinnamon freezes. Only thing that helps is stop X server by Ctrl+Alt+Bckspace. In LM 17.3 everything works fine. And in base Ubuntu 16.04 it works also fine. I tried to update intel dirvers via some ppa, reinstall and reconfigure it, but nothing helps.

Graphic card seems to be IntelGraphic Accelerator 3rd Generation or something like that
Notebook model is Lenovo ThinkPad L530

I see the same problem, also Linux Mint 18.
I am using the NVidia card (nivea driver) on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520
PCI Express x16 - NVIDIA Quadro 2000M
linux 4.4.0-21-generic

This also for me is new since mint 18 (i.e., didn't exist in mint 16 - 17.3)

The problem for me arises when I disconnect from my second monitor, and later want to reconnect.
In past versions, this worked quite well. Linux mint 18 does not work.

Reconnecting without shutdown first results in either:
1. the view switching to the second monitor (with the laptop monitor then black), or
2. the monitor position switching (I need the second monitor on the left, but default seems to put it always on the right).

Attempting to reconfigure this via the GUI usually results in the whole screen freezing up, and needing to kill either Cinnamon or X.

I have a back up of the monitors.xml file
and if I copy this to .config/monitors.xml before logging into the cinnamon session, it is USUALLY corrected. sometimes not. Sometimes I need to copy it again, kill X and re-login.

I had assumed this was a problem of Nivea?
