Bug Description

Mint 17.3 "Rosa" MATE Edition

I have two users set on my laptop. When I switch users, sometimes (not always) the mouse is unresponsive (and doesn't recover) and I'm forced to reboot the computer.

I can confirm this bug is also in Linux Mint 18 (Cinnamon). If there are 2 or more users with accounts on the machine, selecting 'switch user' will work maybe once or twice, but after switching users a few times the mouse will totally disappear. You can see the 'effect' of the mouse but the mouse itself can't be seen. Pressing ctrl-alt-del to bring up the log out screen usually allows logging out and the mouse may or may not work after logging back in.

This bug is easily reproducible. Log in then switch user a few times. The mouse will disappear, leaving the desktop mostly unusable.

Just to follow up, I had a similar problem in 17.3 that may have the same root cause. Please see this page https://github.com/linuxmint/mdm/issues/90 for a description of the problem. When using 17.3, switching the display manager to lightdm (as described at the link) fixed the problem. It appears Clem had that problem fixed pre 17.3 but it was back in 17.3. Could this be the same problem?
