Cinnamon crashes when trying to open trash

Cinnamon crashes when trying to open trash from desktop icon. When I right button click on Trash icon, white box appears with "open" being one of the choices to left button click. When I left button clicked the "open" choice, my screen went blank for a sec or two, and then Cinnamon reloaded (restarted?, I'm not sure). I had two desktop items before I left clicked "open", computer and trash icon. Now, I have no icons. A standard mint screen same as before but with no computer/trash icons.
To fix this, I found that by left finger button clicking big green folder on lower bottom panel bar that contains mint icon time date etc. (show desktop) both computer and trash reappear on my desktop.
I would like to be able to selectively delete or recover some items in trash from time to time provided they have not been written over or lost in some way.--this is what I expect to happen.
I believe this feature was available in other/past versions.
This problem first occurred in the initial (noticed a month or two after loading 17) Qiana Cin. loading of program.
