Closing laptop lid shuts off connected monitor

Bug Description

Closing the lid is set to "do nothing", which works fine in most cases, but when an external monitor is connected, that monitor is shut off (or goes to sleep, I'm not quite clear on the difference) when the laptop lid is closed. One would expect the external monitor to stay on and usable.

Linux Mint 16 "Petra", XFCE 64-bit
fglrx 2:13.101-0ubuntu3

This happened to me when I upgraded from 16 to 17.

When I close the monitor, my display settings reset and when I open it my display is mirrored between the two monitors. I am using an hdmi to watch tv and us to close my laptop.

I run this command to reset after opening to fix the issue:

$ xrandr --output HDMI1 --off
$ xrandr --output HDMI1 --right-of LVDS1 --mode 1920x1080
$ xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --primary
