Desktop icons go missing until Nemo is opened again

Bug Description

The entire desktop goes blank and all icons disappear along with the ability to right-click on my desktop until I open a Nemo File Manager window. Even then, my system still goes back and "blanks" out the desktop after a random amount of time.

This is a picture of my desktop after it froze. This happened almost directly after my computer finished a HardInfo report.

Me too.

This happens every time Nemo crashes. and it does crash - a lot.
Nemo crashed regularly on 16 so I tried nautilus and thunar, which also crashed, but not so much.
Updated to 17 and tried nemo again but it is still crashing.
So 17.1 was a clean install.
Only 30 minutes before Nemo crashed for the first time.

Linux mint 17.1 clean install
Intel i7-2600K + onboard graphics
8GB RAM
