same for me. Takes up to 40-45 seconds
How (wonghow) wrote : | #3 |
I suspect is the Cinnamon using javascript system. The login will get slower after some use because of more settings.
Before the use of cinnamon, login was fast.
I really think Cinnamon should have remain with C language. Desktop is not the web.
kris (makkasi) wrote : | #4 |
I updated to mint 17.1 and the behavior changed a little.
Before when I click login it was loading 10 seconds , then the chime sounds (still black screen) , then loads 30-35 more seconds until the desktop shows up.
After update to 17.1 when I click the login btn, I'm waiting about 40-45 seconds , then the chime sounds and almost immediately the desktop shows up
I cannot say if this was the behavior before, and when started , but it's really annoying problem.
Michael Webster (miketwebster) wrote : | #5 |
Cinnamon has *always* used C and javascript for its runtime.
You guys aren't using BTRFS by any chance are you?
kris (makkasi) wrote : | #6 |
I do not use btrfs. I didn't know what is this at first place.

Mint 17.1
Login from mdm using gdm or html theme.
Login takes 15 seconds with black screen.
System is fully updated.
I tried installing Intel graphics drivers, e4rat, configuring hdparm, swappiness, etc with no luck.

I also experience slow boot time like 40 or more seconds and when I log-out then login again it takes more or less 20 seconds.
I also experience slow response time in opening menu and folders and the system freeze for 5 to 10 seconds if i open 3 tabs in google chrome.
I'm using Linux Mint 17. 1 Cinnamon fully updated using 3.16.xx kernel (Im using this kernel cause my wifi adapter is not supported by your current kernel installed).

I can confirm this bug at linux mint 17.1 cinnamon. My login sometimes seems to take almost a minute. I have the impression that it gets worse with the time.
Once the desktop has loaded everything responds as fast as usual.
The problem appears at both of my two computers (laptop and desktop computer) with the same mint version installed.
UPDATE: I tried different login screens (gdm, gtk, html) and found no difference.
Holger Teichert (holger-teichert) wrote : | #13 |
I tried a different desktop environment in the meanwhile (xfce4). The login time became about 10 times faster. This indicates that it has something to do with cinnamon. But it is by far not as fast as it was with earlier versions of ubuntu.
For a newly created user it seems to be faster (maybe there is something within .config or .cache that slows down the login).

I had the same issue with Cinnamon after doing some hard drive file recovery for someone. Ended up being too many files in trash folder / Applet. Cinnamon was not very happy loading any directory with large amounts of files using Nemo either. It was constantly trying to create thumbnails even when I had it set to detail view. I think there is just too much unnecessary file indexing going on in the background. No longer a fan of Cinnamon. Not worth the short falls.
How (wonghow) wrote : Re: [Bug 1339048] Re: Mint 17 cinnamon login slow | #15 |
I just switched to xfce 4.12 + compton all the xfce apps are fast and
smooth. I even get fading menus that cinammon don't have. Nemo is slow
loading folders once I used thunar.
I am staying with xfce. xfce has always been fast from the beginning.
Mint should have put all the effort into improving Mate instead of creating
cinnamon which became a worst desktop. Worst in the aspects of several
major problems. Major problems are slow cinnamon login, slow apps, very
slow to open control panel, dark panel with some dark icons??? slow
animations. inconsistent widgets, can't compare with KDE widgets.

I recently install mint 17.1 on a pentium M with xfce and faster than a
modern computer running cinnamon !

I'm encountering this problem too. Usually, the login is decently fast. (~10 seconds). Occasionally, however, it takes up to a minute to login.
During this time, cinnamon uses 100% CPU. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to SSH into the machine at the same time, to run more thorough diagnostics.

Same here,
Logging in (the first time) takes about 10 to 15 seconds.
My only problem with in is that Google Chrome take about 10 seconds to load.
Linux Mint 17.2 rafaela cinnamon
I like cinnamon and I want to stick with it.
I just got everything setup just the way I like it, so I really don't want to switch to XFCE edition.
In my opinion this bug is minor, BUT annoying.
If anyone is curious this is my pc.

Use SSD as they are not that expensive now. Use xfce desktop and Compton.
These combination is fast.
Cinnamon cannot beat this.
Cinnamon may look better but lagging and slow response.

Xfce is fast lightweight desktop.
Compton is a lightweight compositor

Try to disable the default sound applet and install the "Sound with apps volume" applet. In my case, this reduced the time between login and desktop availability from several minutes to < 10 seconds. You may manually /usr/share/
To debug this issue, use the Settings Applet (looks like this: ^ ) --> Error handling (not sure about the english label, i'm using a localised version) --> "Looking glass" --> "Errors". Here, you'll find a log with detailed information how long each applet took for startup.

Confirmed.
Using LMDE 2 Betsy with 3.16 kernel (and 3.16 optimized too).
Environment: Core i3-4015U (2x1.7+HT), 8Gb DDR3, 240Gb SSD Crucial (258Mb - real read speed, tested with dd), ext4
Mouse cursor is pointed in center of screen.
When I'm moving cursor - it returns to center few times (looks like few times init).
Tried to switch off plugins, applets, tried to use default themes - no any success.
XFCE loading fine and fast.

I have the same problem. At the beginning (after installation), login was quite fast for a while but now it is abnormally slow (maybe even more that 7 seconds).
