subtitleeditor crashes on video load

It seems like the current version of subtitleeditor (and gstreamermm) in the repositories conflict and are out of date. subtitleeditor edits srt subtitle files, but any attempt to load the matching video crashes the application. The web site http://home.gna.org/subtitleeditor/ indicates the problem is fixed in version 41.0 which depends on gstreamermm 10.6. The properties on the current version indicate "conflicts with subtitleeditor" (?).

Linux Mint 16 Petra Cinnamon 64-bit and package subtitleeditor.
