Bug Description

As a hoped for workaround to the bug reported in #1258397 (can't see rename text in Nemo's icon view - only black on black), I've noticed that you can see file names you attempt to rename in Nemo's list view; however, you get one chance to rename a file, or a portion of the filename... after that, all further rename attempts fail to respond in any way to cursor or mouse input or movement until you logout and log back in! Closing Nemo won't help... no further changes can be made until you close your session. If you rename a part of the file name and move the cursor to another part during the same rename operation - no more UI response.

This first appeared in the Mint 16 Petra RC and continues in the stable release (clean install and up-to-date). I am using Cinnamon 64-bit.

Further information
- nemo does not accept any keyboard input, not even to its path display field (after CTRL-L)
- after restarting nemo rename works -- but again only for once
- once nemo refuses to accept keyboard input, even nautilus behaves the same way

Mint 16, Cinnamon, 64 bit

I would consider this bug as serious, as it makes all work with files and directories impossible.

I also find that I am unable to do any search if I have renamed a file. I cannot type text into the search text box (or delete existing text, etc).

Sorry, failed to mention: I am also using Mint 16, Cinnamon, 64-bit; Nemo is version 2.0.8.

I can confirm this with Mint 17, Cinnamon 64-bit. Nemo version 2.2.4.

Trying to rename a folder or file can only be acheived once or twice. Same thing happens trying to search.

Very annoying.

This is still a problem in Nemo version 2.4.4

it seems completely unaddressed and is kind of a serious issue if you're trying to organize your file system.

I am using Ubuntu 14.10. Is there anything I an attach or provide to help fix or troubleshoot this bug?

Nemo 2.4.5 and still a problem. Renaming multiple files is crucial for me. Thanks for any work on this!

With Nemo 2.4.5 and Mint 17.1, Nemo does not ignore ALL input, but most.

Possible is:
- access Keyboard shortcuts from the menu, i.e. hit F2 to begin renaming a file
- when typing to the Path-Line, Nemo will see a keystroke (it will do path completion, i.e. by applying "/" to the path), but it won’t accept the characters

Not possible is:
- typing in characters, except avoiding upper case letters all the time !?

I tried to find some connection between the characters I'm typing and the failure of Nemo... I can type and rename files and folders without any problem, as long as I do not use any modifier keys (like Shift). This will lead to the error most of the time, but sometimes I can rename a few files with upper case letters in their names and it will not cause any problem.

BTW, also on-screen keyboards like "onboard" do not work in that case, although I do not know X's Input-System good enough to know if this is important or not..

it seems that it's an ibus related pblm.
i was searching a solution (again), and removing ibus seems to work.

sudo apt-get autoremove ibus

but my dead keys ¨ and ^ don't work anymore.

Mint 17.1 Nemo 2.4.5
It's been getting steadily worse over the last month or so. Tonight cannot rename a new folder even the first time although I had not read the comment about not using modifiers like shift - just tried without and it made no difference.

This is a major problem.

And yet another few months and the problem as mentioned a long time ago is still resurfacing.
It is now version 2.6.7 on Ubuntu 14.04

I loved it so much; but this bug makes it impossible to use it.

We already threw out nautilus because of lack of the 'up to parent' arrow
And the fix: nautiluspatchtogglelocationbar had been abandoned 3 years ago

What are we going to use now?
No other browser I know has the desired options that nemo has.

Indeed this is a major problem

OK enough complaining on my behalf
Instead some information that may help;

nemo-bugs

1 sidebar (consistent) bug

sidebar is set to be shown
sidebar is set to show places
all drop-down menus are set to show all
none are set to be collapsed
*
on a new computer start-up; when first opening nemo
*
under "Devices"
it only showed half of my partitions
all of /dev/sda
some of /dev/sdb
none of /dev/sdc
showed no scrollbar
*
I have 16 partitions to show
and usually they can be seen by scrolling down
*
temporary measure:
collapse the "My Computer" menu
and it shows all devices
then it is fine to re-open the "My Computer" menu

2 gksudo nemo getting tired

after handling a few files
copying, renaming, permission changes
it would refuse to reopen (time-out)
*
temporary measure:
use gksudo nautilus
but try to work efficiently with above - naa

3 renaming bug

progressively showing itself more frequently
when renaming words would highlight
but mouse cursor would either not move or disappear
newly typed characters would not show while typing
but would show when finalising
at it's worst renaming was either impossible
or it deleted the file !!
now that is serious
*
temporary measure:
override nemo with the hammer of Thor
nemo was only used for desktop handling

Browser related history

started with xubuntu and thunar
made one bookmark (/var/cache/apt/archives) in thunar
which ended up under "My Computer" in nemo (not a standard place for bookmarks)
xubuntu only being my starting OS I proceeded to:
*
install gnome-session-flashback
While still using nautilus made a bookmark (usr/share/icons)
which ended up under "Bookmarks" in nemo, but the ONLY one showing there?
nautilus is a dependency of gnome-session-flashback; it is not removable!
not happy with the shortcomings of nautilus decided to:
*
change over to nemo
made it the default file and desktop handler (component viewer)
but problems made me:
*
downgraded to 1.8.4
the present trusty version
no image manipulating tools work there
not happy with that fact, so:
*
mid-graded to mint Rebecca 2.4
because of cinnamon dependencies it broke compiz
and not wanting to give up compiz:
*
upgraded back to 2.6
*
used thunar for a few hours as the main browser
but lack of a lot of options we appreciate in nemo
and after below mentioned changes:
*
gave nemo another chance

Possible Solutions

1 side bar bug disappeared after:
removing the shortcuts that were made in other browsers
from then on under "Bookmarks" it showed all the usual suspects:
Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Downloads

2 with the fatigue bug I can't tell yet; not enough work done as a super user

3 renaming bug seems to have gone now too
after reading the mention of ibus and
thinking of the interaction of the keyboard with the themes and
not wanting to loose my keyboard options by un-installing ibus
I installed: ibus-gtk, ibus-gtk3, ibus-qt4
also used another keyboard with USB instead of PS-4

the sidebar bug looks like an interaction of various browsers
creating havoc with the operation of nemo

the renaming bug could have to do with the keyboard

time will tell

This has not affected me for quite some time - since, I think, Mint 17. I am on Mint 17.2 (Rafaela), Nemo 2.6.7+rafaela, ibus 1.5.5-1ubuntu3 (in case that is relevant).

Bookmarks are showing under "My Computer" in the left-hand pane, which is where I want them (I need to figure out how to make the same thing happen in dialog boxes for opening or saving files in applications!). I've forgotten how I got them to appear under "My Computer".
