I have investigated this problem and have uploaded a YouTube video showing the result:

The files are fine under Linux Mint 14. Some how they have been modified for Linux Mint 15 to extend the shadows to the boundary of the image. This of course makes the cursors show a complete shadow square around each cursor.

I suggest we get the files from the Linux Mint 14 distribution and replace the corrupted files in Linux Mint 15 so that an update will fix the problem.

May I point out that this is an Accessibility Problem for Linux Mint 15! Those with Impaired Vision have few choices for large cursors on Linux Mint. These Comix Cursors are large and visible for those with impairments and are therefore MORE THAN JUST EYE-CANDY.

Please Fix this problem by rolling the working files from LM 14 to the LM 15 distribution so that my visually impaired friends, and me, can roll forward to LM 15.
We eagerly await this resolution.

Thanks very much,
Windy Player

Windy Player, a 1000 thanks!
the files from LM 14 worked. I have downloaded comixcursors version 0.7.2-2 package, uninstalled 0.7.3 and installed 0.7.2-2. logout-login - and voila! problem solved.
p.s. I have seen this bug also in debian unstable.

Great. Glad it worked for you. I have several systems that are locked into LM14 due to this bug.
Sure would be nice if someone did a fix where they moved the older version into the latest for LM15, so we could just do an install of latest to fix things up.

I'm not clear how to get package for older version for easy install.

it is very easy to get the link to the file.
go to lm14, run synaptic, mark the package of your choice for reinstalation, disconnect the network and click apply. there will be an error message with the link.
in my case it was http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/comixcursors/comixcursors-lefthanded-opaque_0.7.2-2ubuntu1_all.deb
if you don't have lm14 at hand or if you do not wish to switch from lm15, you can freely browse http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/c/comixcursors/ and download the file you need.
(note the version 0.7.2-2ubuntu1_all, I did not try 0.7.2-3)
after you have downloaded the file, right-click on it and select something like "install/open with package/software manager" and then install it providing your password.

to prevent updates:
tell lm's update manager to ignore updates for the package
tell synaptic to "package" -> "lock version" of the package.
