Bug Description

After update from Mint 14 to Mint 15 Olivia mdm keeps crashing randomly. In a syslog there is always:

kernel: [ 7.563045] mdmwebkit[1884]: segfault at 8 ip b4959023 sp bfeb0b90 error 4 in libGL.so.313.30[b48d3000+b1000]

it tries to restart many times - sometimes it's restored back after 5-6 retries - sometimes never - several reboots necessary to bring mdm back to operation.

Turning of GL Clouds and using simple Clouds theme didn't help.
Any ideas what is the cause ?

Confirmed - this also affects me. Mint login manager constantly crashes, sometimes several times in a row. This has happened ever since installing Mint 15, right after the install and also after applying all updates. It seems completely random, sometimes I am able to get to login screen and log in, but most of the time it will just stick in a crash loop.

I am running the Nvidia proprietary display drivers on an AMD X2 5500.

I resolved the issue by installing KDM and setting that as default.

But really, this bug should at least be investigated, it can be a real showstopper for someone who does not know how to install another login manager and set that as default, or who does not know how to do that from the terminal where you will invariably end up if the login manager won't start.

I ran into this after upgrading Mint 14 to 15 on a CR-48. I worked around it by booting into recovery mode and removing the noveau, ATI, and some other legacy drivers. So, it appears to have been incorrectly detecting the video with those other packages installed.

I removed all unnecessary drivers but this didn't help in my case.

Me too. After i chage the theme, modify the event sound in the login manager, reboot, ooops, system tell me mdm error and try to restart mdm some times, and sleep some time, want to restart mdm again and again..... So, How can i do? Replace it with light DM?

In my case, the problem started after turning on WebGL Couds theme and was resolved by switching back to the regular Clouds theme. However, I first had to remove MDM and install GDM via a tty terminal. After logging in with GDM I was able to re-install MDM and change the theme back to regular Clouds.

no longer affects: ubuntu

Unfortunately I have same issue. NVidia 310 and 313 drivers. Cards GT610 and 7300GT. Only fix working is replacing mdm with lightdm. Segfault of mdmwebkit in libGL.
