Bug Description

I'm running linux mint 15 RC. Sometimes, when I boot up into linux mint, I'll have no sound. Opening the sound settings shows that the Output device is a Dummy Output.

This happens randomly when I start up the computer. Restarting the computer fixes the solution.

hi Laxman,

I can confirm that here on my machine with LinuxMint 15 RC. But perhaps I found a reason why this happens:

during the very first system-update directly after the installation, I got the information that there would be no group called "volume". Perhaps that could clear up things.

So the question would be: does this group need to be reset??

Hi,
yesterday I installed mint 15 RC and also stumbled upon this bug.

After some research I found out, that this is a common Problem in ubuntu 13.04 Raring. I learned that it is related to the linux kernel 3.8. Upgrading to the linux kernel 3.9 solved this issue. I hope that the kernel update will be shipped with the official release of mint 15.

Greetings from Germany,
Johannes

I also have this problem with Mint 15 Cinnamon. Randomly I've got no sound on start up and the Sound settings just shows dummy audio. I've got a Lenovo N581 laptop and running lspci -nn|egrep 'ultimedia|udio|sound|AC97|ac97|EMU' gives me:

00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller [8086:1e20] (rev 04)

I'm running kernel version 3.8.0-19-generic

I'm thinking about trying the kernel upgrade but am a bit afraid to pull the trigger in case something else breaks.

Not limited to the RC, I'm facing the same problem in stable edition of Mint 15 Cinnamon.

Same problem on Lenovo T410i. Every time it happens, shutdown hangs on black screen. Usually fixed after reboot. I have the latest updates.

This bug has affected me on a Lenovo T520 with core i5, 8GB RAM, Intel HD graphics on Mint versions 15, 16 and now 17RC all Cinnamon 64 bit.

A restart fixes the issue 100% of the time (so far)

I have also found that running the following command in terminal brings up sound without the restart though have only tested this on Mint 17 RC.

pulseaudio -k

Its not a fix obviously but may save some people some time

For me, all started switching to Mint-17 Cinnamon ed.
I do confirm that a reboot puts a fix, but then, randomly, the problem shows again. Very annoying.

yes same here on Mint 17. I've been running mint 15 for a couple of years on the same hardware without having any problem. It started happening on Mint 17 (fresh install, no-update)

It seems related to nemo events, like after plugging in a photo camera but I have no elements to testify it 'cause I can't see anything in logs when it happens.

The most annoying thing is that I couldn't find yet any other solution than rebooting.
