FOLLOW UP. Seems to be working as expected today. Both the terminal apt-get update and the MintUpdate gui are working. Yesterday before posting this bug I actually went to the repositories to see if they were up and they were so, I am at a loss as to why this issue occured. Today "seems" to work fine.

Same here: Last night I managed to complete an update (though the download was VERY slow and took ~2hours, as little as 250bps at some points!). This morning, managed an update no problems at normal download speed. Server issues?

Nah it is still not working. The download speeds are horrible, measured in bites, and I know it is not my connection (which is broadband) and works flawlessly with other websites and file downloads. There is either something wrong with the server configuration files or there is something wrong with MintUpdate 4.4.7. I pinged the servers and they all reply fine. It is still having issues and my original thread on the topic on the LinuxMint forum was deleted and all other threads were deleted about the same issue.

Here is a more comprehensive report of my experience with this issue.

First computer that updated to MintUpdate 4.4.7 had no issues at all. It was updated the day of the release of MintUpdate 4.4.7. It is an athalon 64 running LM 13 (maya) 64 bit.

Second computer (LM 13 (maya) 32 bit) updated the day after the realease of MintUpdate 4.4.7 (approximately 12/20) got an message during the installation of 4.4.7 MintUpdate concerning authtentication which has been documented on the linuxmint forums in this thread ( http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=120123 ) namely saying that some software could not be authenticated. I clicked ok and the update commenced. Then after referesh it said that there were new updates available. The updates were extremely slow I canceled and did them the next day after posting message and they were extremely slow, in bytes.

Third computer (LM 13 (maya) 32 bit) I attempted an update today. 4.4.7 MintUpdate was downloaded quickly. Did not get the software authentication error. Refreshed mintupdate and found that there were updates, commenced with update and once again the download was extremely slow, in bytes.

So these are the facts as I have experienced them. I hope this narrows down the problems and we are notified in this thread or the thread on the forums of when the resolution is implimented or what steps we can take to resolve the issue.

Well this problem seems to affect not just Mint 14 but Mint 13 also. The screen prints here all seem similar and the problem started when mintupdate 4.47 was released. It seems to affect 32 as well as 64 bit systems. I am running on a 32 bit Intel cpu. Also it seems that some of the repositories are unreachable, after the system message as posted below, I was able to continue with my update which seemed to work. Also I sometimes do my updates via Webmin which have always worked.
Anyway for what its worth, here is a screen print of the system messages from my last update:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Interesting comment, Dave

I tllk the same route based on your suggestion in the Software sources menu which even gave a tool to select the best down load server. It seems to work, keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks

I changed my sources as well and I was able to run updates. It seems there's something wrong with the main server. At least, my computer was pointed to the main server before I changed it. This issue seems to have been going on for a few days now, at least for me it has until today.

Does anyone have news on what might be wrong with the main update server?

Hi Adino

I believe that the "main server" is based on location. My original main server was at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, I live in Ontario, Canada. There were problems there so in the server selection, there was a menu item which picked the "best" server. For me, that best server was in France. Haven't had any problems since

Oh! Okay. Thanks Clive.

That makes sense. I'm in Stanford, CA but the new "best server" picked for me is in France. It has resolved my "Unable to connect to packages..." error messages. Funny thing is that I don't know what the last "best server" was.

I have the same problem discussed above, and have seen it on and off for the past year or so. The standard line in /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import backport

produces a slew of lines like:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/maya/main/binary-amd64/Packages Unable to connect to packages.linuxmint.com:http:
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/maya/upstream/binary-amd64/Packages Unable to connect to packages.linuxmint.com:http
...
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/maya/upstream/i18n/Translation-en_US Unable to connect to packages.linuxmint.com:http:

W: Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/maya/upstream/i18n/Translation-en Unable to connect to packages.linuxmint.com:http:p:

Switching to a mirror (JMU, in this case):

deb http://mirror.jmu.edu/pub/linuxmint/packages/ maya main upstream import backport

works perfectly. I can switch back and forth with the same results for each, so there's a consistent problem. This seems like a server problem, not a local configuration issue. Changing to a mirror is an acceptable workaround for techies, but not for folks who are just trying to use their nifty Mint computers.

Just in case this is partly a financial bug (e.g., not enough funds for adequate server/network coverage), I've just made a modest contribution to the project. Keep up the good work!
