Bug Description
Linux Mint 13 Mate
Whenever I use the archive manager programs, engrampa or file-roller, to open .tar.gz files, it fails to do so. It reports an error stating that:
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
The archive manager on previous versions of linux mint correctly handled this file format, and opened the archive correctly.
Digging into this further, I find that the following will not un-archive a .tar.gz file:
tar xf $FILE.tar.gz
However, in previous versions of linuxmint, tar was able to un-archive .tar.gz files. The tar installed on Linux Mint 13 Mate is 1.26. A CentOS system I am working on (older) is running 1.20 and _is_ able to un-archive .tar.gz files. Is this some regression in the tar tool, or was the ability to un-archive .tar.gz files a compile-time option that was removed?
