As this is about Linux Mint, and not the Community website, moving it to linuxmint.

affects: community.linuxmint.com → linuxmint

The "Welcome to Linux Mint" screen/dialog hung for me as well the very first time I logged in to Linux Mint and clicked on the "Known problems" link, which makes it a little ironic.

That link opened up Firefox underneath the welcome dialog.

I suspect that what happened is that Firefox popped up some welcome modal dialog box of its own, as that was the first time that it started as well. However, the Firefox welcome modal was obscured by the Mint welcome modal, which is hard-coded to be on the very top. Nevertheless, the Firefox modal grabbed all the keyboard and mouse input for itself, thereby making it impossible to close the Mint welcome modal above it, which in turn prevented closing of the Firefox welcome modal by obscuring its controls.

Confirming what others have indicated, and adding that it is not just Firefox as the same thing happens if the Welcome screen opens Opera as the browser for the web page selected. Web page opens fine, but the Welcome screen close button (and check box) will not work until the browser is shut down. Then both browser window and Welcome screen shut down. So it appears that the click on the close button is recognized, just not executed.

Also, the uncloseable Welcome screen rides on top of the open browser window making it difficult if not impossible to read the web page you have selected.

Low priority annoyance, but it might be a quick fix.

Additional info: If the web browser is up FIRST, and the Welcome screen brought up second, then you CAN use the close button on the Welcome Window just fine.

So, open the browser, open the Welcome screen, select all the items off the welcome screen you want to look at (they will load into the browser), then close the welcome screen.

I'm getting the same issue:
Welcome Screen openes by default at boot up
It will close if I just click on Close
It will not close if I click on any of the options offered in the Welcome Screen
It just hangs there obscuring everything else I open (luckily I have two monitors)
Eventaully what was the Welcome Screen graphics are overwritten and it turns to a grey box

I tried F5 to refresh the background to no avail.

I can open a new instance of the Welcome Screen and it operates perfectly i.e. use the links and then I can close it but the original Welcome Screen instance (now a grey box) remains.
