Experienced ~5 freezes within a week since I installed Mint. Mouse pointer still moves but machine doesn't respond. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace works.
Somehow it got frozen when I was using Google Chrome, usually when scrolling but not always.

It happens exclusively with trying to open Jdownloader. System freezes up and you'll need to do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart session. Also, I can confirm that Jdownloader works flawless on Mint 13 MATE 32-bit so this affects Cinnamon only.

The problem can be solved by installing the 1.6.0_32 version of Java - which can be found here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre-6u32-downloads-1594646.html

When you're done, try this on terminal:

Cinnamon hangs without any java program running. I even deactivated the java plugin from Firefox. This is definitely a Cinnamon issue and/or a issue with gtk3.

I have to agree with hdt-q in that it seems like a Cinnamon and/or GTK3 issue. I too only see this in Cinnamon and not MATE. Others have reported that when the desktop freezes and you move the mouse around, if you quickly switch to tty1 with top running, you'll see the cinnamon process jump to 100% utilized. Killing the cinnamon process not soffice.bin brings back the desktop, but it will freeze again if LibreOffice is still open and used.

Because it seems that we haven't really nailed down what is causing Cinnamon to freeze, what can we turn on (debugging or otherwise) to provide more information to see if we can find the cause?

I got this freeze with mate using libreoffice. It seems to only occur when autosave goes off, my whole entire system will freeze except for the mouse. The keyboard does not work, but the power button on the keyboard works and shuts down the system.

It is not a "Cinnamon issue"; I am using Mate without Cinnamon ever being installed and have identical problems. Oddly, some users report complete loss of functionality, while others report the ability to resume after various keyboard sequences. For me, the system requires a hard reboot, even though the mouse still moves the cursor without accepting further input. @ #10: You are definitely right. I also read that there are Mint versions different from cinnamon one involved. I also read that this kind of problems has been happening with previous versions of the distro, even with Mint 7, 8, 9. Yesterday my system gone crazy simple by opening a 400 kbyte svg image (Gnome image viewer was the selected application). Firefox opened the same image without problems, later I was able to open it with Gnome image viewer, it seems to be a random issue. Anyway, since it happens with previous versions, with Cinnamon and Mate, and Gnome2, and Compiz, clearly it is not bound to Cinnamon, nor gtk3, nor specific WM. Since it seems that it happens on Ubuntu too (I found something on 11.04), from what can be found in forums, the problem seems to be bound to graphical environment, e.g. X and/or graphic drivers, and/or to a kernel issue. For the record, I am running Mint 13 with a 3.4 kernel installed by gdebi from Ubuntu repositories. In one forum someone hypothesized that the issue can be bound to ondemand feature introduced in kernel 2.6.10 version. Have a look here, for example:

I am able to repoduce the freeze every time by simply using Cinnamon and LibreOffice (though it happens at different time intervals). Switching to the console, I kill the cinnamon process and switch back, and my desktop is working again. No need to restart X or the computer. I'm still convinced it's related to something in LibreOffice is causing cinnamon to freeze, whether the problem is LibreOffice and/or cinnamon. My .xsession-errors file is full of Clutter errors. Would it be helpful to post it to this bug?

I'm looking for suggestions on how to troubleshoot this so we can find a resolution.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I have just disabled CPU governing and will report any positive results if found. Freezes are occurring once per day lately, so it may take some time before observing a distinguishable difference.

In my case the solution was to update to the latest cinnamon version 1.4UP3. After doing this I have not had any freezes and the update solved the issue on both of my computers. Before the update I could make the system freeze by heavy scrolling in Libre Office calc and got the error: "mdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0" in the log.

You guys are doing great at troubleshooting this. The cause of the problem isn't precise enough for us to fix anything yet, but we're working on Cinnamon at the moment and we might have some good news. Although the latest Cinnamon (pre-1.5) isn't ready to be packaged and released into Mint, it already is working and it features many of the changes from Gnome Shell 3.4.

I'm not suggesting you all go and compile it, but maybe some of you can do it and provide debs to others, or at the very least give it a try and see if it fixes things. I wrote a quick tutorial to show how to compile the latest muffin/cinnamon in Linux Mint 13: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/955

At the moment if you compile muffin and cinnamon from their "master" branch (i.e. if you follow the tutorial without specifying any branch) you'll end up with a muffin pre-1.0.4 (which calls itself 1.0.4) and a cinnamon pre-1.5 (which calls itself 1.4-UP3).

When you have a freeze, please try to switch to another vtty and check memory consumption and swap file. I noted a couple of times that the memory was full and the system was swapping like crazy. Could be one issue of mine PC however.

I also have had same symptoms. It has happened on me twice while using Chrome, I'd be on Gmail composing an email, I'll click on Attach File then click on a bookmarked folder and then it will freeze. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will work and get me back to the login screen.

Following the instructions in the link from post #21 of this bug report (which eventually leads you here: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/955 ), I built cinnamon and muffin from the "stable" source code into deb files and installed them on my desktop.

Since then, I have not experienced a freeze at all. There must be some sort of fix in the code that fixes the freeze. The question is, when is this going to show up as a patch for all of the Linux Mint 13 Maya users out there so they don't have to build their own deb files?

I'm affected too!!! I have Linux Mint 13 maya with Cinnamon. I was visualizing my pictures with Image Viewer, and after some minutes of work my desktop freezes. Mouse doesn't work neither Atl+ctrl+del. I restarted my laptop and I began the same activity with the same bug three times.

After doing all that was indicated, I restarted my laptop and I began to visualize pictures again when... surprise: the same bug.

I remember that I had this problem the last week when I tried to make a videocall with skype, but i believed that it was a typical bug of Skype.

Ubuntu 12 isn't beautiful as Mint 13, but is more stable. I have not expected this sort of problems in this distribution.

First it only happened maybe once in 2 days. At the moment it's happening 5 to 6 times a day or even more often. I have no idea which application is causing it, but the last times I tried to do a google hangout with Firefox.

Cinnamon crashes for me.

The system boots up and is stable/normal for a variable period of time and will all of sudden crash spontaneously yielding a green checkerred screen (see attached image), a mouse which is movable (sometimes), and no response to any keyboard actions or mouse clicks (thus I cannot access tty). Crashes occur usually within an hour to several hours of boot. Crashes do not occur when using Mate.

There are no error logs in syslog, dmesg, or kern.log. As per attached Xorg.log the Nvidia driver has an error and crashes. I think we can therfore conclude that for some reason Cinnamon is not compatible with my OpenGL GeForce GTX 560/PCIe/SSE2 with Nvidia driver. I have also attached the rest of my system info.

Please advise, I much prefer the aesthetics of Cinnamon over Mate.

I can confirm the same issue with Cinnamon 1.4.0 it does randomly freeze quite often.
It seems there's no relevance for what I use before the crash. I frequently use (in different combinations) Inkscape, Bluefish, Shutter, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, GIMP, Clementine and a few various apps and it seems to me it doesn't matter what kind of apps I'm using.

I also use docky and it sometimes crashes too usually before cinnamon crash. Maybe this can be related?

I'm using PinguyOS 12.04 and have bumblebee installed.
Let me know what kind of details I should provide.

Same problem here. Mouse moves and I can swap to a different TTY but needs a hard reset to get going again.
Tried different graphic drivers and kernels but nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu 12.04 with Cinnamon 1.4UP3.
Froze when I was opening a PDF file in Evince (full screen).

I'm thinking it's a problem with Compiz. Does Mate use Compiz? If not and there's no problem with Mate, then it could quite easily be Compiz. That would explain why some desktops are effected whilst others aren't.

Hope this gets a fix soon :(

Got this almost every day on Ubuntu 12.04.1. Killing the Cinnamon process from a different TTY usually "fixes" the issue.

 - The computer is running very fast. All the hardware works.
 - After booting and logging in into Mate, the system is running a period of time, after it freezes. The period is not fixed, it's variable (it ranges from 1 minute to 7 hours). Sometimes it freezes when opening skype, opening the linux-mint menu, working with or without VMware Workstation, ... I can't reproduce the problem.
 - I first thought maybe the SSD is the problem. But with a normal HDD on a Linux Mint Mate 13 (64bit), it's the same problem on this notebook.
 - The System freezes with and without the ATI fglxr driver.
 - The notebook was shipped with Windows 8. After using the notebook with Windows 8 a few hours without any freeze, i think it's not a hardware problem. It seems, that my linux has a problem.

Can anybody help me?

This is bug is affecting my system as well. Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 1.6 desktop.
As it has been mentioned before about Java being a cause my java version is 1.7.0_09.
Haven't been able to pin down what application is causing this to happened, usually Chrome is open but has happened when it isn't as well.

I wanted to add to the growing list of those reporting this same problem with Mint 14 (OEM Cinnamon release) AMD64.....
It too seems to happen while Firefox and/or LibreOffice is open ....
Today is the first day that I haven't had these lockups ..... (or freezes) .... but I haven't used either one of the mentioned programs .... (with one exception ... this morning I used Firefox quickly to download Opera.... and have used only this browser (Opera) during the day .... quite often off and on today.... at least beyond the time when I would have had experienced a "freeze."

Since there seems to be so many "clues" .... i.e., maybe many different programs are actually causing the "freeze," that one might suspect that the Mint install process (scripts) is/are not working properly for Firefox, LibreOffice, etc. ....

I will try to use the "bad" programs later .... when I can tolerate those painful interruptions .....

If anyone is interested in my simple troubleshooting plan ... I will try to write only my second note then ... or my second post in a forum .... ever .... to give the results later .....

I normally stay in the background ..... but I felt so bad that no one has given any responses since Dec. 13 .... and this has been such a disappointing experience with the new Mint package .....

It is certainly a weird problem .... previously, I had installed Mint14 via the OEM iso for a clean install ......

As promised I decided to do some more simple troubleshooting today .... and I decided to use Firefox this morning .... after checking first that Opera continue to operate and exposed no problems .... i.e., no "freezes" ......

After only a couple of minutes and a few web sites, while using Firefox, the system froze .... I restarted (rebooted) .... then went to the same web sites with Opera to check for anymore hints ..... but no problems ... no freeze ..... I then decided to see if this could be reproduced ..... I then started Firefox .... went to different sites .... and the screen froze again .....

So having other things to do on the system, I switched to Opera to do my surfing ..... I have been able to continue to use Opera throughout the day with no problems or freezes ....

I guess I will tomorrow remove Firefox and then reinstall .....

Since a few days I have been getting the same problem on a Mint 14 Nadia 64 bit with Cinnamon 1.6.7 (I have all recent updates installed).

From my observations, it always happens after I start Google Chrome with quite a few tabs. Then Cinnamon freezes, but luckily I am able to switch to a text console (CTRL+ALT+F1), log in and clearly see that cinnamon process is taking about 100% CPU. Killing it helps instantly, I am able to go back to the GUI (CTRL+ALT+F7).

I don't know if it is exactly the same issue, but today I couldn't work with Cinammon (1.6.7, Ubuntu 12.10, Kernel 3.5.0-27-generic). My system hangs badly, even without opening any program. I can move the mouse pointer but the click doesn't work. I can't swith to the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1..F6), kill the X server (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) or anything.

I thought that it was a hardware issue, but then I switched to Unity and then to Gnome 3, and both works (I also tried Cinnamon 2D but it doesn't work).

I think that it may be an CPU usage issue, but, I open a gnome-terminal and run "top", but it seems to hang with Cinnamon.

I have Dropbox and Google Chrome (helper) in "autostart".

How can I debug it?

In my case, it seemed to be "wrestool" that was called from gnome-thumbnail* (I don't remember the correct name right now), called from Cinnamon. I was able to log-in as root and kill it. Cinnamon restarted and now I am using it normally.

What is the status of this issue? Today my Cinnamon froze in the middle of a 8-party videoconference... not nice. The attached part of syslog may be related to this but it's hard to tell, occurences and their circumstances are (as noted many times above) rather random. Platform: MacBook Air 2012, Ubuntu 12.04 with Cinnamon 2.0.14-20131203040103-precise.

I am 90% sure my problem on this is caused by the SSD drive and the JBD2 journalising process. If I happen to have top or iostat running when everything freezes I can see that top is showing lots of "wa" (io wait) and iostat is showing the JBD2 process at work. It might be due to a Trim bug of some kind. I have witnessed this on kernels 3.2, 3.8 and 3.11.

I am still occasionally experiencing this problem (or something that looks just like it) in 2020. In my case, the freezing happens only when the Cinnamon screen saver is active -- the date/time on the screen saver stops advancing, and no keys or mouse clicks will revive it -- even selectively killing processes on the computer via a remote login (ssh) doesn't work -- I end up with no choice but to do a hardware reset.

It happened to me again just now. I ssh'ed to the computer and did a reboot, but even after the ssh service had shut down, the computer was still hung with a frozen screen saver, and I still had to do a hardware reset in order to get it going again.
