Bug Description

Kubuntu installed from 6.06 i386 cd - kept updated using software update utility included with kubuntu.

When it does not work, the sound card still appears to be detected and configured. No sound output happens, however.

sudo alsamixer allows you to change volume - yet - no sound... not muted in alsamixer either.

I do not see any difference when the sound does work, either...

Sound appears to play in kde... but no sound comes out of speakers...

I do not know how to reproduce this bug other than reboot - I did see some others in the ubuntu forums having same problem, however.

Ok - I waited for the kde sound server to go idle (default 60 seconds) and then:

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

This appeared to work as normal, minus any sound output .... Could it be outputting to the headphone port?

ahhh - tested plugging in headphone set while running above command - that in and of itself did not fix it... However, I then opened kmix and played with master volume one more time ... sound came out speakers - not headphone. I will try this again next time i reboot and this does not work.

To recap the workaround I just found:
1) plug in headphone
2) mess with volume level
3) unplug headphone (or not - does not matter - sound is not coming out of headphone anyway)

Please attach (don't comment inline) the output from the following commands:

$ lspci -nv
$ tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat

From a fresh (cold, power down, wait 2 minutes, power back up) boot once you've logged into KDE, please attach the output from:

$ amixer

Then repeat the three steps you've outlined in your previous comment and again attach the output from:

$ amixer

Please clearly label each set of output.

Will do - I'll have to wait until the problem crops up again - it
doesn't happen regularly... I had some trouble with it initially, and
then not again until last night after recovering from the broken xserver
patch (by updating to the newer patch from later in the day).

Daniel,

This did happen again. The same workaround did not work this time.

Attached, please find:

lspci.txt (lspci -nv)
tail-sndstat.txt (tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat)
amixer-before-workaround.txt
amixer-after-unsuccessful-workaround.txt
amixer-after-new-workaround.txt

Steps:

1) bootup
2) The sound was not functioning (amaroK appeared to play but no sound).
3) I did the lspci -nv
4) I did the tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
5) I did the amixer
6) tried the headphone workaround previously mentioned <- did not work
this time (no sound in amaroK still)
7) shutdown and power off
8) powered back on
9) still no sound (no sound from amaroK)
10) tried the headphone workaround again < - still no sound
11) stopped amaroK from playing started stopped - still no sound
12) sudo cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp <- produced white noise
13) started playing in amaroK and sound was produced.
14) ran amixer again to capture the final txt file.

It seems that sound may be somewhat unstable recently?

This happens to me too (with ICH7 family chipset).

I also get weird headphone behaviour, where sometimes the headphones refuse to work and sound comes out of the internal speakers no matter what I do.

I suspect that the detection of headphones is somewhat broken, and perhaps the 'no sound' problem is related. Perhaps the sound is directed to the headphone jack, but as line out?

I also think this might have something to do with battery level... It
seems that both times this happened recently, although the laptop was
plugged into AC, the battery was at a very low level. I'll pay
attention if/when this happens again...

It is definitely an upstream problem as well. A Gentoo user contacted me asking if I had the same problems as him. As of the most updated Feisty, this still doesn't work properly. I don't like having to reboot to get sound working (sometimes 2 or 3 times).

Possible fix (worked for me, thanks to gnubien on #alsa):

add this to /etc/modules
options snd-hda-intel model=m2-2

Changes will take effect on reboot. To get it going *now*:

lsof /dev/snd/*

and close every app listed (easiest to do so through the process manager / task manager thing), then do it again to make sure there's no output (meaning all the sound apps are closed). If there's no output:
sudo modprobe -r snd-hda-intel

then
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

and sound should be there.

SoupNazi has rev 01, and lolow's "Interrupt" is IRQ 50 (mine is 21). I guess this is sort of a mix of bugs on different Intel sound cards, which all manifest similarly. I'm guessing a similar line in /etc/modules would fix those cards too, I just don't know what to put. I guess you could try different values for that model= part, but I'm going to go see if there's a bugreport upstream at alsa.

I'm Googling it, and it looks like some are saying that the newer alsa modules have it fixed. You can try compiling the newest alsa driver into your kernel or see if it works with an up-to-date Feisty (I haven't tried changing my /etc/modules back to blank since those options had it working, so I haven't tried to see if newer Feisty works by itself, I just know that it didn't in February).

It works perfectly for me on Feisty with nothing regarding sound in my /etc/modules. Anyone else?

New Ubuntu newbie wring,
My problem with sound with fresh 6.10 install (untouched sound settings) -> Detects USB device with correct drivers present but no sound output)
0: Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 (Alsa Mixer)

Reconnecting USB cable or going into hibernate mode adds a generic driver for sound (USB utility problems?)
1: USB Mixer (OSS Mixer)

Sound is now apparent but not tuned with USB sound device, once I change it back to 0 works perfectly but volume sliders are not 100% accurate what I mean by that is they jump up and down, sometime never move, never mutes/unmutes (very annoying) Restarting the computer seems to reset sound settings

Hope someone releases a simple guide to understand configuring sound (backing up the config file for later use) or using another utility for sound or updating Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 driver
