Bug Description

Jaunty 9.04

Getting Ethernet overruns on the RT 8139 ethernet in the laptop (Lenovo 3000 N100 768). This has become noticeable recently and may be due to the kernel upgrade/patching.

Booting with 'acpi=off' makes the problem go away.

So where does that suggest the issue lies?

Neil Wilson (neil-aldur) wrote :

acpi=ht also makes the problem go away

acpi=noirq
pci=noacpi
pnpacpi=off
noapic
nolapic

all have no effect and the problem remains.

adding acpi_apic_instances=2 as suggested by dmesg has no effect either.

Neil Wilson (neil-aldur) wrote :

The workaround for this is to add 'nolapic_timer' to the boot system.

You do this in Grub 2 by editing the /etc/default/grub file and adding the parameter to the line with 'quiet splash' in it. (Parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT).

Upstream needs to fix the qos requests in the Ethernet driver to solve the problem properly.

Hi Neil,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 401891

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
