Bug Description

My Medion MD96420 came with this DVB-T Tuner card, which doesn't seem to have any drivers either out of the box or from v4l-dbv. As far as I can tell, the remote control for it doesn't work either. Here are some specs:

I was shipped a similar DVB device with a Dell laptop. I'm not too miffed if it doesn't work as I didn't ask for it but it seems that there is no firmware available for v4l-dvb.

The related Dell driver link is : http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R175809&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=239014

Somehow the firmware needs to be cut out of the file and provided in a v4l-dvb friendly format. I'm not sure how to do that or if it is possible at all.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi pacshady,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 215624

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

There is (was?) one developer, source code, initial driver...

From the logs it seems that the component that have the Id [1131:7160] is a SAA7160 from NXP (ex Philips).
http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1131/7160 : for the reference of the Id.
It is a PCI Express audio/video bridge. I hope this will help in the future development even if the bug is open since 2 years.
I put the datasheet attached.

This is my first steps trying to help the Ubuntu community, and I hope I am aligned with the common way of working.

Hi Guys,
I found somebody intensively working on the saa716x chipset. See here: http://powarman.dyndns.org/hgwebdir.cgi/v4l-dvb-saa716x/. I had no time yet to test it on my TV card (details here: http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/AVerMedia_AVerTV_Duo_Hybrid_PCI-E_%28A177%29). if somebody manage to achieve something, please post your results here for example., Best Max

The driver at http://powarman.dyndns.org/hgwebdir.cgi/v4l-dvb-saa716x/ reportedly builds and works OK with older releases using linux versions 2.6.24 thru at least 2.6.35, ., but it apparently has dependencies on linux 3.x that keep it from building.

I tried compiling it on Oneiric.

There were a lot of errors, most resulting from undefined macros such as I2C_CLASS_TV_DIGITAL and T_DIGITAL_TV
and from a missing linux header:

( v4l/dvbdev.c:36:28: fatal error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory )

Just a feed back. I could compile and install the saa716X drivers being developed on the site I mentioned above. My kernel is 2.6.32.28-generic. Unfortunately my card is not supported by the driver as indicated on the "menuconfig". That's it.

Pac Shady, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Hi.
I see that this issue is inactive since some time.
I want to report the state of my (limited) knowledge about this.

I know how to make this this device work !
All I have to do is Boot into Windows then restart the computer into Ubuntu 15.04.

Here is some console output:

~$ uname -a
Linux Henri1504 3.19.0-21-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Sun Jun 14 18:31:11 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When "cold booting" into Ubuntu :
