Bug Description

Hi,

I just tried to upgrade to 1.10.2 which is supposed to be a bugfix only release, but it seems there's a regression there, and lightdm doesn't start.

I'll try to investigate this, but in the meantime, when looking at the logs, I can see:

[+0.01s] WARNING: Could not enumerate user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data: No such file or directory
[+0.15s] DEBUG: Creating shared data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data/lightdm
[+0.15s] WARNING: Could not create user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data/lightdm: Error creating directory: No such file or directory
[+3.76s] DEBUG: Creating shared data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data/corsac
[+3.76s] WARNING: Could not create user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data/corsac: Error creating directory: No such file or directory

I'm a bit unsure why it doesn't manage to create the whole path by itself. Also, I don't think /var/lib/lightdm-data is a really good name, I'd have called it just /var/lib/lightdm, and maybe add a data/ subfolder if needed.

The lightdm-data directory behaviour shouldn't have changed in this release - can you attach a full log?

It didn't change, sorry. I just happened to look at the logs after of the failure to start (actually, I'm unsure what happened here, actually it didn't *start* after logging out post-upgrade, but doing a manual restart worked). And looking at the logs, I saw that error (well, warning) and thought about reporting it.

Changed in lightdm:
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Triaged

Also, is there a reason why all state folders are called “lightdm” and this one is called “lightdm-data”?

I don't know why it's called lightdm-data (I didn't write this feature). It seems to me it should be /usr/share/lightdm/data or similar but I don't remember noticing that when the feature landed.

Considering it's variable data, I think keeping /var makes sense, but yes, using /var/lib/lightdm/data makes a lot more sense to me :)

We are also seeing this issue in our distribution. Shouldn’t lightdm’s install script create that directory?
