I don't remember when lightdm stopped working but I think it was since upgrading to gnome-3.10.2

Problem there was solved the same way as I did: removing /var/lib/lightdm/*

Thanks for your bug report, it sure would be nice if downstreams would report these issues and fixes upstream where they could be found. I'll work on rolling these fixes in now.

If I remove everything in /var/lib/lightdm/ then lightdm starts.
# systemctl poweroff doesn't clean up the stale lock
