Bug Description

< hellekin> Doesn't PNG generate smaller files in general for smaller images?
< hellekin> for that display size, I guess you can gain a factor 3 in size by converting to PNG
< hellekin> could come in handy when you have millions of avatars on your disks

Now that we have support for GIF files, we should also try to convert them to PNG to see if it makes them any smaller.

Of course we have to first ensure that these GIF files are not animated, otherwise only the first frame will survive the move to PNG.

There is a gif2png package in Debian that might be useful.
