gcc-4.7 branch imports fails (timeouts)

It was working fine until you deleted and recreated it, causing it to restart from scratch :(

It still seems to be fine, it's incrementally importing.

not so quick ...

granted it had a wrong URL, but if the import progresses that slow, it's not acceptable if the import finishes four weeks later.

There does not appear to be any change that could be made to Lp's code to make the network and other host faster

there seems to be a lot of overhead for just importing 500 revisions. so yes, there is room for improvement, just import 10000 revisions for each import.
