Bug Description

As seen on OOPS-2022PPA2 an InvalidEmailAddress: Andre Masella [<email address hidden>] is not a valid email address. was raised by the process-upload script. The email looks valid, though.

OOPS-2024PPA3 is another example.

This looks like user error. The error message is a bit ambiguous because of what the user did. The user placed his name in the email address. This is not a email address:
    Andre Masella [<email address hidden>]
This is an email address
    <email address hidden>

He might have meant to write
    Andre Masella <email address hidden>
Which is parsable.

Agreed, this is user error and should not OOPS, just reject it.

Also I suspect a bug should be filed on dpkg about this being accepted as an email address.

(Unless RFC's disagree, which they might - but I've /never/ see [] around the email part before.

William Grant (wgrant) wrote :

I don't think dpkg knows about email addresses.

I've duped this to another bug which describes this general problem better, it's not restricted to email addresses. I aim to fix this when I start Red team's maintenance cycle.

FTR, that is not a valid email address with the [] chars.
