2006-07-13 08:28:07 Matthew Paul Thomas description Hi, My Windows desktop has enlarged fonts, and the top two sidebars on the left sometimes do not appear. This happens most noticeably when viewing bugs with long descriptions or comments, (See attachments Topscreen.jpg, Bottomscreen.jpg) while other bugs are OK (see large_ok.jpg). It also happens when the window is not maximized, like 'malonescreen.jpg' and 'ubuntu.jpg'. I listed this as a bug in Launchpad because it happens in more than one section (Malone and launchpad.net in general). I am using Internet Explorer, and though I know IE isn't a supported product, this is a usability problem with launchpad, possibly with the theming, or how IE handles the theme (compatibility issues?). My desktop is at 1154x864, IE 'About' screen is in attachment "ieversion.jpg". Windows font size (Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > General > Display > Font Size) is set to "Large Fonts", 125% of normal size (120dpi). The left and right columns sometimes go missing in Internet Explorer, when something in the middle column is too wide. This happens more often when "Text Size" is set to Larger or Largest. For example, in <https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/1>, the right column appears on the left after the middle column, and the left column does not appear at all. This seems to be because of a wide comment from Kristian Hermansen.

2006-07-27 05:08:50 Matthew Paul Thomas launchpad: statusexplanation Reproduced on bug 1. I have this fixed for the bug page, but the various blue boxes with e-mail addresses in them (e.g. on the person page) are still causing trouble.

The underlying problem is Internet Explorer's expanding box bug, where it widens boxes to fit long words, which in turn pushes neighboring floats further down. http://positioniseverything.net/explorer/expandingboxbug.html

2006-07-27 08:02:00 Matthew Paul Thomas launchpad: statusexplanation I have this fixed for the bug page, but the various blue boxes with e-mail addresses in them (e.g. on the person page) are still causing trouble. So like the article says, there are two ways to work around this bug: (1) using the IE-only "word-wrap: break-word" property plus ensuring no non-text element in a portlet is too wide, or (2) using "overflow: hidden" to chop off overflowing text. Option 2 would result in some text never being visible, so I've chosen option 1. But this will require constant vigilance to ensure wide non-text elements (like text fields) aren't used in narrow boxes.

The sidebars on the front page still drop in Internet Explorer, with Medium font size, when the window is 539 pixels wide or narrower. The problem probably happens with wider windows when using Larger text size, but I can't tell because of a Wine bug. Bug 47781 hindered me from realizing this problem earlier.
