Need for a shorter application list

Bug Description

When I load the list of translatable applications, it's very long to load, even with high bandwidth, it's very very long to sort (my browsers warn me several times about a blocking script), it's pretty unusable and hard to find my way into.

This list is at (change for your own distro and language).

What I'd like, is to find on this page a short list of categories:
Desktop, Help, Command line, Development, etc.. sorted by translation importance, so we could focus on applications for inexperimented users, and keep translations for administrators, developers, people who should know english.

It may too give us other ways to sort applications, just like KDE, Gnome, Xfce, Date of coming in Rosetta...

When reading bug list for Rosetta, i've seen something about filtering in Rosetta being developed, but couldn't find useful information.

Changed in rosetta:

status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

There really seems to be a problem with the script which makes the long list a pain. If I resort according to date, the browser (Firefox, Dapper) will lock several times and warn of a "unresponsive script".

Hm, short list is now available. However there is no point in the sort function anymore, since it sorts only the items, which fit in one page. It would be great to have a kind of server-side global sort mechanism.

Oops, sorry. I completely missed a reasoning on categorization part.

Shall I file a rosetta bug or feature request out of my previous comment?

File a feature request if you want. But this is more a launchpad bug than a Rosetta one, our batching infrastructure doesn't allow such sorting, when it's implemented, all pages using batching will get it for free.
