Bug Description

Launchpad should give the Karma for bugs fixed by a Package Upload (via the Closes LP#nnnnn changelog syntax) should be given to the uploader, not the launchpad janitor

Actually, it should be given to the one preparing the patch (the one in the changelog), not the person who happens to have upload rights. Not sure that's what you meant, so I thought I should mention it here.

That's not possible unless dch is modified to add the E-Mail address as well as the name to the changelog so there's a unique pattern to match on.

Micah, my apologies for the imprecise wording. The name and address is already in the changelog. Take https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnomescan/0.6.2-0ubuntu1+lucid1 as an example. The credit should mostly go to "Uploaded by", not "Sponsored by". That's what I meant to say and what I was trying to make sure of.

You do hit an interesting point, though. Among the the three people "Patch creator", "Debdiff preparer" and "Sponsor" the value added is disproportionately geared towards the former individuals. Unless the patch adheres to DEP3 the patch author is not easily identifiable. And even with DEP3 it may be too much trouble.

My 2 Yen without offering any clear solution.
