Bug Description

Several translations suffer from not having a sort of "standard" glossary for several terms. Every big open-source project solves this in its own way - almost always by using a default text where some words have their use enforced.

Use-case: The english word 'screen' is translated as "ecrã", "ecran" in portuguese from Portugal. It's a almost unknown term in Brazil, anyway (altough it is correct). In Brazil, people translate screen as "tela" (which came from a painting screen), but several people translate it as "monitor" (sic - this is an english word). So, in pt_BR, the word "tela" must be prioritized.

This can be part of rosetta. Every word which appears on a string and is on language's glossary would be shown as it.

Examplo:

Original string:
"Screen resolution"

In glossary:
screen = tela

Your translation:
(textfield)

For the German translation the upstream glossaries differ quite a lot. So you need to use different translations in e.g. GNOME or KDE. We linked to all glossaries on your translation team wiki page. An effort to sync all glossaries would be a good idea, here.

We in the English Translation team are already building a glossary of terms:

This glossary has been incorporated into a Greasemonkey script to aid translation in Rosetta. The script is linked from our main project page:

The Romanian Ubuntu team is using a webbased glossary for the translation.
This glossary is used by all other Romanian translation team (Debian, Gnome, OpenOffice, Mozilla)

This glossary can also be queried using jabber.

Maybe Rosetta could define a convention for such glossary and each team to implement it's own web based glossary that can be used in rosseta by mean of web services

Changed in rosetta:
importance: Medium → Low
